Just so one can learn and comprehend the subject; the actual meaning of the word calligraphy should be defined. It meaning according to the dictionary is ‘beautiful writing’. The word has two Greek roots to it; they are “kalli” which means beautiful and “graphia” which means writing. The letters that we use today have their roots which can be traced to the Roman alphabets of the first century AD. Before which there have been many forms of writing styles that have existed during different civilizations. Earlier on people used to communicate through the pictorial symbols, these symbols were developed for different kinds of acts, such as walking, eating, after that pictures that represented sound were created, in this way the form of writing evolved and many alphabets were derived from it. The Greek inspired the Romans to develop characters, from where it spread to the entire world, because of the influence of the empire over the globe. Changes have been done in the form of writing ever since the time of the Romans; this was done to improve the speed and productivity of things that were communicated through the letters. During the fifteenth century methods of printing and mechanical reproduction of things began whose evolution continued till the twentieth century and after that. Calligraphy has been able to survive because the use of computer generated works has left the people longing for hand-produced works.

The art of calligraphy is not only related to decorate text and it is also not used as ornaments between the letters. In true sense there is a lot of difference between a beautiful form of writing and it being considered as an ornament. In calligraphy the alphabets are themselves beautifully structured. The structure of letters are like the bones and muscles in the body. You don’t need to overdo the structuring to make calligraphic writing look beautiful it will itself look great, without you trying much. The governments have been trying hard to develop this art and improve it further.

Some of their works involved the writing to God and that had to be written in a way that only the learned could understand it. That’s why calligraphy was put to use, as the writing style was decorative and ornamental. The end of the fifteenth century saw the rolling out of Bibles in the Gothic print, which needed the monks to write in calligraphic style. Later it started getting used to convey messages in the field of scholars. It was used to send invitations, business messages, etc. At the start of the nineteenth century the flat edged pens were considered as calligraphic pens, this had replaced the pens with a round tipped that made it difficult to write in the calligraphic form. After which the calligraphic form of writing had almost died, but when William Morris who was a British poet and artist started developing an interest in the oblivion art of penmanship, then the art began to revive. Today, from kids to adults have understood how beautiful this art form is and it can decorate the letters as no other form of writing can.
